Porsche introduces the Li-Ion 911 GT3 and Boxster Spyder

Porsche has announced the introduction of Li-ion batteries in cars, instead of classical Pb-acid batteries, used almost since the invention of the car.
The new type of battery will weigh less than 6 kilograms.

New Li-Ion offered by Porsche will be at least 10 kg lighter than a traditional battery with 60Ah cells lead. Porsche will offer new optional battery since January 2010, for clients 911 GT3, 911 GT3 and Boxster RS Spyder at a price of Euro 1904, when purchasing a new car. The battery will be delivered separately and will be fitted on request to replace conventional battery.
There after, customers will be available for old Porsche, at a price of 2499 euros.

The great disadvantage of this battery is limited by the temperature of 0 degrees Celsius, below which no longer works.
For this reason, owners must use the old battery in winter.
But the advantages are multiple and related to low weight, important for consumption and performance, but also a simpler maintenance.

New dimensions are identical to a conventional battery, except the height which is lower by 7 centimeters.
Connections and parameters are fully compatible with the traditional.
Capacity will be 18 Ah, the equivalent capacity normally available in a 60 Ah lead acid battery.
Lithium-Ion battery has a reduced load time.
