Hamburg and Stockholm, the first green capital

Surrounding Hamburg and Stockholm have managed to steal the title of "green capital" of Europe for the years 2010 and 2011. This new award created by the European Commission aims to "recognition and reward" efforts of cities, in terms of sustainable development. Greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by the inhabitants in Stockholm by 25% in 1990 and is continuously decreasing. Hamburg has reduced CO2 emissions by 15% in 1990 and wish them a drop by 40% by 2020. Every year the city will be chosen for performance and objectives in the field of environment. Thirty-five cities and have submitted the application for this first edition, of which two French, Bordeaux and Montpellier. Among the eight finalists are Bristol, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Friborg, Munster and Oslo. All cities in northern Europe.
